Yes. Without gutters, rain water can spill off the edge of your roof and cause a massive erosion. Meaning each time it rains, the water will push the soil further away from your house. This can lead to the foundation of your home settling, causing the walls to crack or floor to become uneven.
Generally, it is a good idea to clean your gutters at least twice a year. But depending on where you live and what sort of foliage is near your home, you may need to clean the gutters more frequently. For example, if your home is surrounded by pine trees, you may want to clean your gutters once every 3 or so months.
If you notice that water is spilling over the edge of your roof each time it rains, then odds are your gutters need to be cleaned. When gutters are clogged with leaves and other debris, rain water will collect and spill over the side of the gutters, leading to erosion or large puddles in your yard.
As a rule of thumb, if you notice a build up of debris in your gutters, or improper drainage, it is time to pull out the ladder-- or call a professional to clean out the gutters for you.
Sometimes it can be hard to tell when your gutters have reached the point of no return. When your gutters have become damaged to the point where repairing them would be a waste of money and resources, it is time to throw in the towel and get them replaced. But how do you know when the time is right to toss out the old and replace it with new? Here are 4 signs it’s time for a gutter replacement:
- A large number of cracks, holes, or rust stains. While these issues can all be repaired and mended with some sealant, it becomes harder (and quite frankly, pointless) to continue repairing them if the issues are frequent or numerous. When you start to see an excessive amount of damage like this on several sections of gutter, it is time to have them replaced.
- Sagging or pulling away from the roof. If the fasteners holding your gutter system to your roof become broken or loose, a gap will appear between the gutter and roofline. This will lead to rain water running between the gap and rotting the wood and fascia of your home. If issues with your fasteners persist, and your gutter struggles to remain attached, then it may be time to look into new gutter installation.
- Peeling exterior paint. When water becomes trapped behind the layers of paint on your gutters, the paint will begin to peel off. If this happens, it is a sign that your gutters are in poor condition and need to be replaced.
- Water damage to your home. If your gutters are not functioning properly, then the rain water will collect or be redirected in towards your house, rather than channeled away. When water accumulates around your gutter system or streams down the exterior of your house, you will be faced with water damage such as leaks, flooding, rot, and mold. Prevent this from happening by installing new gutters.
There is no “one size fits all” for gutters. The architecture of your home and the land it sits on play key roles in determining what gutters will be best for you. The desired material and function of the gutters is also a very important aspect to consider when choosing gutters for your home.
